The words and tune of this song are haunting--at various levels. Seger captures well then confesses the frustration and realization of a life lived without any centering or reason to live. The reason given; only to live fast, have wild sex, with no direction seemingly at all. At the end of such a life, while looking back, he waxes somewhat philosophic. "He is older now" and realizes for his whole life he "has been running against the wind!" At the end, he does not offer any repentance or otherwise change of mind.. He only recounts some observations and regrets. Consider:
Second: Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
Third: I found myself further and further from my home
Fourth: I guess I lost my way[?]
Finally: I was living' to run; And running' to live; Never worried about paying; Or even how much I owed
A Christian Response:
Are you, "Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends"?
Have you, " . . . found [your]self further and further from . . . [your] home"?
Have you, ". . . lost your way"?
Were you just, ". . . living to run, And Running to live; Never worried about paying: Or even how much I owed"[!]
Christ can: Wash away all of those regrets and memories!
Christ can and will Be your Savior, Lord, and Friend
Christ can and will Be Your Home and Take You Home to Him
Christ is: The Way, The Truth, and The Life
Instead of Running "Against the Wind" Run to Christ!
Embrace Him by Faith and Repentance.
[Verse 1]
Seems like yesterday
But it was long ago
There in the darkness
With the radio playin' low, and
And the secrets that we shared
The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
'Til there was nothing left to burn
And nothing left to prove
[Pre-Chorus]
And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me, oh-so tight
[Chorus]
Against the wind
We were running against the wind
We were young and strong
We were running against the wind
[Verse 2]
And the years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
I found myself further and further from my home and I
I guess I lost my way
There were oh-so many roads
I was living' to run
And running' to live
